The Harsh Truth About Breaking Into Medical Sales (And How to Actually Do It)
Share
Breaking into medical sales isn't just hard. It's brutal.
Every week I talk to people who've applied to hundreds of jobs, sent out the same résumé over and over, and can't figure out why nobody's calling back. They think it's about luck or timing or knowing someone at Stryker.
It's not.
The truth? Most people are playing the wrong game. They're treating this like a numbers thing when it's really about precision. Strategy. Actually having a plan.
A few months ago, someone told me they'd applied to over 300 positions without a single callback. When I asked about their approach, they said they didn't really have one.
That's the problem right there.
If you actually want to break into medical sales, here's what works and what doesn't.
Your Résumé Isn't Going to Get You Hired
Everyone's got "strong work ethic" and "sales experience" on their résumé. That doesn't make you different.
What gets attention is clarity, being able to explain why you want to sell medical devices specifically. Not just because it pays well or sounds interesting, but because you actually understand the mission behind it.
Study the company. Learn what they make. Ask smart questions about their pipeline or where they're headed in the market. That kind of prep is rare, and hiring managers notice it immediately.
Networking Isn't Spamming LinkedIn
Sending 50 connection requests to random reps isn't networking. It's just noise.
Find three people who are actually doing the job you want. Reach out because you're genuinely curious. Ask them about their toughest day in the field. What surprised them when they started? What do they wish someone had told them earlier?
People can tell when you're being real versus when you're just trying to get something from them. The ones who approach networking like they're trying to learn something, not climb a ladder, are the ones who actually get referrals.
You're Going to Get Rejected. A Lot.
Before I landed my first role in medical sales, I got turned down 47 times. Some of those rejections still sting.
But after a while, I started treating every interview like game film. I'd go back through it in my head. Where did I lose their attention? When did my energy drop? What questions threw me off?
By rejection number 30, I figured out I'd been talking way too much about what I wanted from the job. Not nearly enough about what I could actually bring to the table.
That shift changed everything.
You Can't Stop Getting Better
This industry moves fast. If you're not improving, you're falling behind.
Practice your pitch. Learn surgical terminology. Watch product demos. Talk to reps who've been doing this longer than you.
Six months ago I worked with a candidate who had everything, smart, driven, years of retail leadership experience. But she couldn't get past the first phone screen. When I asked her why she wanted to work in medical sales, her answer was surface level. "Good money and I like people."
We reworked her story. Turns out she'd watched an orthopedic rep help her mom during surgery, and that moment completely changed how she saw healthcare. That was the real reason. Her actual why.
Two months later, she had three offers.
That wasn't luck. That was preparation finally meeting opportunity.
Treat Your Job Search Like You'd Work a Territory
Wanting it badly isn't enough.
You have to treat your search the same way you'd manage a territory. Research your targets. Build real relationships. Follow up. Refine your message. Learn from every single "no."
That's how the top performers get hired.

I still remember sitting in my car after another rejection, wondering if I was actually cut out for this.
Turns out I was. I just needed someone to point out what I couldn't see yet.
Let me do that for you.
See you in the field,
